Modern Garage Doors

Garage doors have come a long way over the years. Here’s the latest update on modern models.

Garage doors used to be one-size-fits-all but that is not the case any more. Modern models come with an array of choices for a homeowner to select from. Appearance, size, functionality and materials are on the menu of things to think about when purchasing a garage door. Here is an update on the latest and greatest:

Appearance:
Design options include simple to complex and contemporary to classic. The surface may be completely smooth and plain or it may have ridges, panels, molding and even windows. It is a wise idea to look over some home decorating magazines for external aesthetics ideas. Take a look at the current style of your home and compare this to the ones in the magazines. Notice which garage doors have been chosen to complement this particular architecture and style. Plan accordingly. This one housing component takes up nearly a third of the exterior of a home. It is important to choose one that will beautify the look in order to bump up curb appeal.

Size:
Double, single or triple? How many vehicles does the family own? How many cars might they have in the future? If the household adolescents are itching to get behind the wheel, it might be wise to allow for an extra future car or two. Thinking about storage is a good idea, too. Most households store carpentry tools, lawn maintenance equipment and sporting goods in this space. Make sure the size is ample for all of this and more.

Functionality:
Some models roll up in segments, some move up-and-over, some swing out to the side similar to a regular front door. Take a trip to the local home building supply store that carries garage doors and check out the functionality of a few. It may be wise to have a sales representative take a look at your abode in order to give his or her recommendation.

Materials:
Some of the materials that are available are wood, steel, fiberglass and aluminum. There are pros and cons to each of these building materials. Wood is classic and rich looking but will take a bit more maintenance. Steel will last forever but it is heavy and some homeowners will have trouble lifting it if the opener conks out. Fiberglass is low budget and lightweight but may not last as long as other options. Aluminum is also inexpensive and lightweight, but tends to get dented more easily than some of the other options.

There are modern garage doors to fit every architectural style and budget. Take a look at a multitude of models, look through architectural magazines and visit the dealer showroom in your neighborhood. Compare and contrast the options and you will come up with the one that is perfect for your home.
